Dental education and practice often fail to sufficiently incorporate historically underrepresented racial and ethnic dentists (HURE), and, surprisingly, the motivating factors behind their success remain elusive. A substantial shortfall in the literature is the absence of insights into their experiences. This qualitative study critically examines how HURE dental faculty in predominantly white institutions (PWIs) cultivate and exercise agency to flourish academically while overcoming challenges and adversity within the workplace.
In 2021 and 2022, a series of 13 semi-structured interviews were carried out with HURE dental faculty members hailing from 10 distinct institutions. Using agency as a construct and critical race theory as a guiding principle, the audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed to explore the ways in which participants flourished within their institutional contexts.
Racism, unfortunately, was a pervasive experience for the HURE dental faculty, stemming from both the faculty and student populations. River sediments near the surface in Qinghai Province, P. R. China, yielded the isolation of two novel, gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile, yellow-pigmented, irregular rod-shaped bacteria, named JY.X269 and JY.X270T. China, situated at 32°37′13″N, 96°05′37″E, in the month of July 2019. Both strains displayed growth characteristics at temperatures spanning 15-35 degrees Celsius, a pH of 7.0-10.0, and in media containing sodium chloride levels varying from 0% to 60% (weight by volume). Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed a strong phylogenetic relationship between the isolates and Ornithinimicrobium cavernae CFH 30183 T, exhibiting 98.6 to 98.8% sequence similarity, O. ciconiae H23M54T with 98.5 to 98.6% similarity, and O. murale 01-Gi-040T with 98.3 to 98.5% similarity. The 16S rRNA gene and 537 core gene based phylogenetic and phylogenomic trees, respectively, showcased that the two strains are uniquely clustered with the three earlier noted species. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) measurements between our isolates, JY.X269 and JY.X270T, and other Ornithinimicrobium species showed values of 190-239% and 708-804%, respectively.
